Purpose. Something we all think about over and over again. “Spirit House” is precisely that: an examination of life purpose. A lot of my songwriting is about the creative process. That’s not ever intentional, it just seems to happen. I am fascinated by creative process—I read books, watch documentaries, listen to podcasts, and generally obsess over learning more about others’ creativity as well as my own. These days, however, I am learning to simply accept my process for what it is: it gets better and we only continue to grow and improve as long as we step back from judgement. Walker Johnson and Luke Bace feature on drums and bass respectively in this song. It’s as close as I could get to a recording of what the live version of this song (which we only got to play at a couple shows before live music died) sounds like. Thanks to Walker and Luke, this was another old song that was finally given life.
lyrics
Burn my skin before your altar
Wounds and wonders made to feel brand new
Step by step I’ll never falter
Strangle all these words for something true
All we have is love
When the rest give up
Be a warrior of truth
Keep it all right here with you
Washed in leaves and pulled from ember
Such a vision I would never move
Bitter follows sweet like honey
Every single sound I speak for you
All we have is love
When the rest give up
Be a warrior of truth
Keep it all right here with you
Never fall again
All we have is love
When the rest give up
Be a warrior of truth
Keep it all right here with you
Never fall again
Only rise
